With The Winter Soldier, Daniel Mason, now a practicing physician, has taken his considerable literary talents and his knowledge of medicine and given us the unforgettable story of Lucius Krzelewski, a medical student forced to become a doctor before he is ready, and Margarete, the mysterious nun turned field-nurse he falls in love with. Mason was inspired by real stories of how the Austro-Hungarian Army, woefully unprepared for World War I, had to enlist medical students with scarcely any clinical training to assist in the field.
