Meet Alec Karakatsanis

  • November 22, 2019

The author of Usual Cruelty: The Complicity of Lawyers in the Criminal Injustice System comes to the Wharf in DC on Mon., Nov. 25th, at 7PM!

Meet Alec Karakatsanis

In this powerful book, Karakatsanis, a former public defender, issues a passionate challenge to our society's profoundly racist justice system and the legal profession's role in perpetuating it. Founder of the Civil Rights Corps, an organization designed to bring systemic civil rights cases on behalf of impoverished people in the criminal justice system, Karakatsanis alternates between stories of his clients and outlining a new theory of crime and punishment. Reporting on some of the suits he has brought and won, he shows, for instance, how the bail system has developed from a measure to ensure people return for court dates into a means for locking up poor people who have not been convicted of anything.
