The authors/activists come to Frederick, MD, on Thurs., June 20th, at 7PM!

An Evening with D. Watkins and Chris Wilson

Join us for this powerful conversation with authors and activists D. Watkins (We Speak for Ourselves: A Word from Forgotten Black America) and Chris Wilson (The Master Plan: My Journey from Life in Prison to a Life of Purpose). Free and open to the public; no registration required. Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event. Presented in partnership with Frederick County Public Libraries. For more information, contact Curious Iguana, 301-695-2500, [email protected].

D. Watkins is the New York Times bestselling author of The Cook Up and The Beast Side, editor-at-large for Salon, and University of Baltimore professor. He is from and lives in East Baltimore, where he navigates two very distinct worlds—“Down Bottom,” the storied community of Baltimore that holds a mirror to the country’s poor Black neighborhoods, and the elite sanctums of prominent black thinkers and public figures. In We Speak for Ourselves, Watkins tells the truth as he has seen it, sharing the stories of the most vulnerable and uncovering the systematic injustices threaded within our society. He forces us, as readers, to take an honest look at ourselves and ask if we are part of the problem or the solution.

Chris Wilson, born and raised in a tough Washington, DC, neighborhood, is the embodiment of second chances. At the age of 17, he was charged with a crime and sentenced to life in prison. What should have been the end of his story instead became the beginning. Wilson developed his personal master plan and embarked on a journey of self-improvement that included earning his high school diploma and associate’s degree. After 16 years in prison, he convinced a judge to reduce his sentence and became a free man. Wilson now resides in Baltimore and is a successful social entrepreneur who employs returning citizens. The Master Plan is his unforgettable story.
