The Hive is a story of class in America and the fates of four sisters and their family business in a politically divided Midwestern town. After the sudden death of their patriarch, the surprising details of succession in his will are revealed and the mother’s long-term affair surfaces as her apocalypse prepper training intensifies. Facing an economic recession and new civil war amidst the backdrop of growing fear and resentment, the sisters unite in their struggle to save the family foundation they’ve built.

Melissa Scholes Young is the author of the novels Flood and The Hive. She’s a contributing editor for Fiction Writers Review and Editor of two volumes of DC Women Writers: Grace in Darkness (2018) and Furious Gravity (2020). Her work has appeared in the Atlantic, Washington Post, Ploughshares,Narrative, Lit Hub, Poet Lore, and Poets & Writers Magazine. Scholes Young was named a Bread Loaf Camargo Fellow and a Quarry Farm Fellow at the Center for Mark Twain Studies. She is an associate professor in the Department of Literature at American University in Washington, DC.

Young will be in conversation with Jared Yates Sexton, a political analyst, co-host of the Muckrake Podcast, and author of American Rule: How A Nation Conquered The World But Failed Its People.
