Children’s Book Roundup: October 2020

We don’t know about you, but a week out from Election Day, we’ve had all we can take of politicians, pundits, pollsters, and people in general. But we can still get behind animals. In that spirit, here are three charming, critter-centric tales of friendship to share with your favorite little ones.

Norman: One Amazing Goldfish! by Kelly Bennett; illustrated by Noah Z. Jones (Candlewick). Norman flips! He dives! He does amazing tricks befitting the scaly genius he is! But when the tiny orange guy gets — gulp — stage fright during his big performance at Pet-o-Rama? Well, that’s when his sweet owner shows Norman that love, support, and a bit of tuba music are all he needs to be his best!

Cozy by Jan Brett (G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers). “Storms rolled over the tundra when Cozy the musk ox was separated from his herd…[He] braced himself against the wind, and his thick coat warmed him like a blanket.” Soon, other arctic creatures — from lemmings to a snowshoe hare — are snuggling up against the furry giant to escape the bitter cold, and Cozy realizes he isn’t all by himself anymore!

Mr. Brown's Bad Day by Lou Peacock; illustrated by Alison Friend (Nosy Crow). “Mr. Brown was a very important businessman. He always carried a very important briefcase, and he worked in a very important office.” But when that very important briefcase is carried off by a baby elephant? Mr. Brown sprints all over town trying to get it back! Might there be something very, very important — or, at least, soft and cuddly — inside?
