There was plenty of clicking and scrolling on our site last month, but readers showed these five pieces the most love overall.

5 Most Popular March Posts

  1. The Mormon Excommunication of Fawn Brodie: Why Banishing the Famous Biographer Reverberates 65 Years Later” by James Reston Jr. We’re not sure why this fascinating feature — which originally appeared nearly two years ago — shot to the top of the most-read list, but we’re not complaining.
  2. Books Alive! 2014. Just like last month, thousands of readers zeroed in on the Independent’s excellent writer’s conference, which took place March 29th. Missed it? Read a recap here. And mark your calendars now for next year’s event, which takes place April 25, 2015.
  3. “The Top 10 Historical Fiction Authors” by M.K. Tod. For the zillionth month in a row, readers flocked to this much-talked-about, much-shared list of the best historical fiction authors. You people take this sort of thing seriously, don’t you?
  4. “8 Breeds of Historical Fiction” by David O. Stewart. We were tempted to call this one “The Top 8 Breeds of Historical Fiction,” but we didn’t want anyone blowing a hammie in the rush to click on it (see above).
  5. A review of The Man Who Walked Away by Carrie Callaghan. Author Maud Casey’s “Spectacular third novel,” writes Callaghan, “is a meditation on the elusive nature of time and life.” How cool does that sound? Very, judging by the number of readers who wanted to hear more about it!
