Prepare for an evening of raw, powerful storytelling and thought-provoking art as Mariah "Beyond Your Definition" Barber takes the stage to host the 3rd Friday Night Open Mic at Busboys and Poetry in Brookland on August 16th. A multidisciplinary storyteller, consultant, spoken word artist, and activist, Barber has spent the past 15 years creating socially conscious art that challenges perceptions and sparks meaningful conversations. With a master's in public health, a DEAI certification from Cornell, and a BA in international studies, Barber's work is deeply informed by cultural anthropology and global issues, giving it a captivating depth. Barber's motto, "Some people do, some never do, some overdo, how do you do?", reflects their commitment to pushing boundaries and empowering authentic voices. Having performed at the 2020 George Floyd uprisings and climate justice rallies, Barber is passionate about being a teaching artist who helps youth craft their perspectives on pressing world issues. Their impressive accolades, including being the 2014 national haiku slam champion and a four-time DC arts fellow, speak to their immense talent and dedication to their craft. Under Barber's guidance, this open mic promises a celebration of diverse storytellers and the power of words to profoundly connect us. For two electrifying hours, the stage will feature professional spoken word artists, open mic rookies, and musicians offering unique, resonant narratives. Expect to be moved, challenged and inspired by the raw emotions, thought-provoking commentary, and authentic vulnerability on display. Barber's infectious passion and commitment to fostering spaces for vulnerability will create an atmosphere both electric and deeply personal. Their ability to cultivate community and belonging is a testament to their skill and deep understanding of the human experience. With an open-minded, packed house of arts appreciators, this promises to be an unforgettable journey of self-discovery and a reminder of art's power to heal, inspire and unite across differences.
