On May 19, 2024, at 5:00 pm, Busboys and Poets Books is hosting an event featuring Ron Daise discussing his book "Raptors in the Ricelands" at their 14th & V location in Washington, D.C. The novel explores family secrets and cultural conflicts in the fictional Georgetown, SC community, as newlyweds Florence and Chadwick Wineglass attempt to promote economic legacy while unconsciously ensnaring those they assist. Spanning the future, present, and past, the book fosters connection with African diasporic communities globally and includes historical accounts like the Orangeburg Massacre, Black church life during slavery, the rise of White supremacy, the Reconstruction Era, and Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association. Daise, a native of St. Helena Island, SC, is an acclaimed author, performer, educator, and cultural interpreter who has documented and shaped Gullah Geechee heritage for decades through his work. He is best known as "Mr. Ron" from the 1990s Nick Jr. show "Gullah Gullah Island," which he co-starred in and consulted on culturally. The event offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from Daise about his latest book exploring important themes of family, culture, and economic empowerment through a fictional lens grounded in real history. Attendees can purchase copies of the book and get them signed by the author after the discussion and Q&A. As the event is free and open to all, it provides an accessible way to engage with and learn about the rich Gullah Geechee cultural heritage from one of its foremost ambassadors.
