Loyalty Bookstores is thrilled to host an in-person event celebrating the release of Elysha Chang's debut novel, "A Quitter's Paradise." This darkly humorous and provocative book explores themes of grief, family secrets, and the immigrant experience. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 7:00 PM at Loyalty's Petworth location (843 Upshur Street NW, Washington, DC 20011). "A Quitter's Paradise" follows Eleanor, a young woman grappling with her mother's death and unearthed family secrets. As she navigates her grief, the novel delves into the lives of her Taiwanese immigrant parents, Rita and Jing Liu, and their struggles to raise their daughters in a foreign land. Chang's exquisitely crafted novel contemplates the complexities of American immigrant ambition and its long-lasting impact on subsequent generations. Elysha Chang is a writer and educator based in Brooklyn. She has taught creative writing at various institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University. Chang is a graduate of Columbia's MFA Program and has received fellowships from the Center for Fiction and Kundiman. Her short works have been published in various literary magazines and journals. Joining Elysha Chang for this event is Kat Chow, a reporter, writer, and author of the memoir "Seeing Ghosts." Chow was a founding member of the Code Switch team and podcast at NPR, and her work has appeared in prestigious publications like The New York Times Magazine and The Atlantic. She has led classes and spoken about her reporting in various cities across the United States and beyond. This event is free to attend, but registration is required. Attendees can purchase "A Quitter's Paradise" from Loyalty Bookstores, either online or in-person during the event. Loyalty has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment or intimidation of any kind, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees.
