Details A fantastic, timely debut from Syrian American author Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar. Nour's father passed away in the summer of 2011--cancer. Nour knows only summers in Central Park and bundled up winters on the subway, but now her mother is moving the whole family back to her childhood home in Syria. The Syria her mother knows is gone, though, replaced with an unstable and dangerous land. Now she and her family are on the run, seeking refuge across the Middle East and into North Africa. To help her cope with this new, nomadic lifestyle, Nour reminds herself of the stories her father used to tell her. Through a parallel narrative structure, the story of Rawiya unfolds. Rawiya is a sixteen-year-old girl who, to save her widowed mother from a cruel society that casts unmarried women aside, disguises herself as a boy named Rami and gets a job as a mapmaker's apprentice. She travels the world with the mapmaker and witnesses mythical beasts, epic battles, and real historical figures on her journeys. A deep immersion into the richly varied cultures of the Middle East and North Africa, The Map of Salt and Stars follows the journeys of Nour and Rawiya as they travel along identical paths across the region eight hundred years apart, braving the unknown beside their companions as they are pulled by the promise of reaching home at last.
