Details | A longtime staff writer for The New Yorker and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Looming Tower, Wright has spent most of his life in Texas and his new book is a lively, comprehensive tour of the state’s history, politics, and culture that questions its stereotypes even as it examines its contradictions. While no Democrat has been elected to a statewide office in more than twenty years, a record that has resulted in redistricting, minimal regulation, open carry and concealed carry gun laws, the cities of Texas, especially Houston, Dallas, and Austin, are diverse and surprisingly progressive. As he shows us Lone Star industries, profiles famous Texans ranging from Sam Houston to Leadbelly, George Bush to Beyoncé, and samples the food, the arts, and the landscape, Wright offers his own profound personal reflections on a state that uniquely crystalizes the urgent questions about American identity and values underway throughout the country. This event is free to attend with no reservation required. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. |
