Details Set during the American Civil War, Lloyd’s intricately plotted second novel unfolds largely in Havana. The narrative follows Everett Townsend, an American sea captain who falls afoul of Spanish authorities and is forced to become a blockade runner for a corrupt merchant. Trafficking in contraband war material is dangerous enough, but the stakes rise precipitously when Townsend gets involved in the messy aftermath of the murder of an English diplomat. Drawing on the life of an ancestor who was a sea captain as well as on his own intimate experience with the region during his years as an NBC foreign correspondent, Lloyd vividly evokes the details of 1860s sea-faring, Cuban slave plantations, and international intrigues. As a career Senior Foreign Service Officer, Huddleston served in the United States Interests Section in Havana under Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush as Deputy, then Coordinator of the Office of Cuban Affairs, and, finally, as the Section’s Chief from 1999 to 2002. During her tenure she met many times with Fidel Castro, notably on matters such as the Elián González custody battle, and her memoir is a fascinating inside look at a government few Americans were privy to. While recounting a history of myths, misconceptions, and missed opportunities for détente, Ambassador Huddleston was also on hand as relations between the U.S. and Cuba thawed. Her report on normalization was adapted by the Obama administration in 2014. Now she looks ahead to a future when someone other than a Castro will lead Cuba. This event is free to attend with no reservation required. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis.
