Details | Two-time Man Booker winner Peter Carey starts his latest novel with a real-life car race— the Redex Trial, a 10,000-mile circumnavigation of Australia. In 1953, the year of the first rally, the roads were rough to nonexistent and the cars barely adequate. To the two-hundred-plus vehicles participating in the 1954 event, Carey has added one driven by the fictional Irene Bobs, who sets out for the sheer reckless joy of it. Joining her are her car-salesman husband and their navigator, Willie Bachuber. Told by Irene and Willie in alternating chapters, Carey’s suitably fast-paced novel gives an insightful, humorous, and often unsettling view of a country on the cusp of having to grapple with its brutal treatment of its indigenous people. Carey will be in conversations with Elliot Ackerman, author of Dark at the Crossing, a finalist for the National Book Award. This event is free to attend with no reservation required. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. Click here for more information. |
