Vick Mickunas interviews Philip Kerr about his latest Bernie Gunther novel Field Gray (Marian Wood/Putnam)

Vick Mickunas interviews Philip Kerr about his latest Bernie Gunther novel Field Gray.

Philip Kerr wrote several novels featuring the Berlin police detective Bernie Gunther. Then he stopped writing about him. Following a lengthy hiatus Kerr decided to write more.

Kerr employs extensive flashbacks. Readers learn more about Bernie’s past with each successive book; his service in the German Army during the World Wars, and his career as a detective during the 1930′s.

In more recent books Gunther was living under assumed names in Cuba and Argentina. In the latest installment, Field Gray, Bernie spends most of the book in the custody of various law enforcement agencies. There are also flashbacks to his time in a Soviet POW camp.

Gunther is his usual wise-cracking, crime solving self; draped in noir, riddled with moral ambiguity.
