Susan Hawk is one of the many agents who’ll be taking pitches at the 2023 Washington Writers Conference. Here are some things to know about her:

• Susan, a returnee to the conference, represents children’s, middle grade, picture books, and young adult.
• The name of her agency, Upstart Crow Literary, comes from a 1592 insult slung at a young Shakespeare by a more established, less successful playwright.
• She says, “I’m looking for something that makes me laugh out loud, I’m a sucker for bittersweet, and I can’t resist a character that comes to understand how perfectly imperfect the world is.”
• Susan’s manuscript wish list includes “literary, smart, intense YA that is about more than romance.” (Read more about her list here.)
