Children’s Book Roundup: January 2023

Vegetables in Pajamas by Jared Chapman (Abrams Appleseed). It’s getting late, and you know what that means: Bedtime! And you know what that means: Pajamas! But what pair to wear tonight? After all, there are so many to choose from: cozy, snuggly, silly, or fluffy, not to mention “pajamas for when it’s cold and pajamas for when it’s hot.” Which ones will the adorable broccoli, carrot, eggplant, and others pick? Who cares? The fun part is watching them bounce around the pages while they figure it out!

Noticing by Kobi Yamada (author) and Elise Hurst (illustrator) (Compendium). “Take this mountain for instance…A climber might see a great challenge, a scientist might see the movement of an ancient glacier, and someone else might notice the cool breeze traveling from its snowy peaks. Though we all may look at the same thing, we don’t always see it in the same way.” This quiet, subtle book and its exquisitely detailed illustrations encourage young readers to slow down, breathe deeply, and really absorb the amazing world around them.

The Night Before Lunar New Year by Natasha Wing and Lingfeng Ho (authors) and Amy Wummer (illustrator) (Grosset & Dunlap). “’Twas the night before Lunar New Year and all through weeks past, we’d been preparing and waiting. Here it was at last! Ma ma had swept out the old year with her broom. My brother, Ge ge, and I each cleaned up our room.” The little girl can’t wait to put on the bright red dress she bought in Chinatown and start celebrating, and who can blame her? Lunar New Year is exciting!
