DC’s 16th street, part of the L’Enfant Plan (developed in 1791) has a storied past. Its nicknames include Avenue of the Presidents and the Road to Heaven (for the 50+ houses of worship from the White House to the Maryland border). On this portion of the route we’ll see numerous embassies, sculptures of ducklings and elephants, and architectural beauties like the Scottish Rite House of the Temple and the Chastleton apartments. According to our book, the Mount Pleasant neighborhood has attracted immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean since the 1950s. We’ll visit local businesses like Leon’s Shoe Repair, restaurants like Corado’s, and entertainment venues like GALA theatre (originally around the corner from Corado’s). By running, we’ll get to check off two of the 22 walks—getting you started on your own adventures to explore the remaining walks! Also, I’ll have free samples of SaltStick‘s amazing FastChews available for participants. Thanks to SaltStick for providing those! TICKETS Equitable tickets are $15. Sliding scale ticket price option for anyone who needs a little extra help right now, no questions asked. Standard tickets are $25. Standard ticket fee that will help cover our operational costs. Recommended for anyone employed, in a multi-income household, or otherwise has the means. Pay it forward tickets are $35. If you have a bit more to give, help us continue to provide equitable ticket pricing. I am requesting you pay via Venmo or Zelle, in an effort to eliminate fees to you and to me. However, if you feel more comfortable booking through Eventbrite, you may do so here. Venmo: @Chelsey-L-Stone (last four digits of phone number: 2729) Zelle: [email protected] MEET: Dupont Circle / Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Dupont Memorial (Google Map) between 5:45–6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13. The program will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. You will check in with Chelsey Stone. ROUTE: We’ll run an easy-paced (~11:00 minute/mile), 3.1-mile route with several stops in DC’s Dupont Circle and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods. PREPARE: As this event is a running tour, no reading is required. If you do wish to purchase the book, check out one of DC’s many amazing bookstores for online and in-person options. Our route will take us by the terrific Bold Fork Books, which carries the book; we’re checking to see if it’ll be in stock if you’d like to purchase it from them after the run! POST-RUN: After the route, we’ll finish at Corado’s at 3217 Mt Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20010 (Google Map) 7:00–8:00 p.m. for some food and book discussion. (Please be prepared to cover your own meal costs.) INCLEMENT WEATHER PLAN: If weather creates unsafe conditions, we will hold the discussion at Corado’s at 3217 Mt Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20010 (Google Map) 7:00 p.m. I will inform you no later than noon Monday, April 13 if an alternate event will take place. All registered runners will receive reminder details two days prior to the event. Chelsey Stone moved to the DC area in July 2024. She spent a year in San Diego, where she led a few Read & Run on the Road events in Southern California (like this one and this one) and was a guide with Read & Run Chicago when she lived in Chicago for several years. Chelsey is an avid reader, she even blogs about it. She loved creating routes based on her favorite books set in Chicago. Fortunately for her, founder Allison Yates has expanded her business to include Read & Run Tours. |
