Celebrate Pride Month at East City Bookshop with a special fundraising happy hour for SMYAL! Join us on Wednesday, June 18th, from 5:30-7:30 PM to for a special fundraising evening for ECB's favorite local LGBTQ+ organization! The night will include snacks, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), special activities, book recs from ECB's queer book club, and special giveaway totes with queer books! Note on Format: This event is in-person only. $5 of each ticket will be donated directly to SMYAL, and the rest will cover refreshments at the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to make additional donations. SMYAL supports and empowers LGBTQ+ youth. They actively work to create a world where queer and trans youth thrive through affirming programs and services designed to develop critical life skills, build community, and foster a sense of belonging. For forty years, SMYAL has been dedicated to meeting the unique needs of queer and trans youth, eliminating the barriers that prevent them from thriving as they grow into adulthood. Find out more information at https://smyal.org/ Queering the Narrative is a safe space for LGBTQIA+ readers to come together and discuss queer experiences in literature. Each month we focus on a specific genre, and members can read any book within that genre featuring LGBTQIA+ characters/storylines, to discuss how the conventions of the genre affect telling a queer narrative, or vice versa. Founded in 2023, the goal of this club is to create a local community of queer adults who love reading and would love to have an open dialogue about the variety of queer stories available today. Find out more about the club and our monthly newsletter on the store's website.
