Join Vocales Verticales for an afternoon of poetry and writing. How can we use poetry as a tool for resistance? Discover how others did it before and write some poems.

Attendees will explore the poetry of Audre Lorde, a self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,”  within the historical context she wrote in. Dedicating both her life and talent to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia as a poet, scholar, and civil rights activist, she was also New York State's Poet Laureate in the early 1990s. This will be followed by the prompts of the day, which will be available for those attendees who would like to write. There will also be time for sharing of poems and exchanging feedback among participants. The program will take place in the Multi-Purpose Room.

The Washington DC-based Vocales Verticales project aims to promote poetry and the arts in Spanish, as well as to create spaces, both online and in-person, that connect the community through poetry. More info:
