Join us for a fabulous conversation about magical worlds with three of our favorite middle grade authors! There are secrets and ciphers hidden in the alternate New York City of Laura Ruby's York series. Twins Iris and Lark have to contend with mysterious happenings in their town as they face being separated in school for the first time in The Lost Girl by Anne Ursu. And in The Dragon Egg Princess by Ellen Oh, Jiho, a magic-less boy in a magic-filled world has to decide how far he's willing to go to protect the Kidahara forest and the creatures that live there. Adventure awaits!

About Ellen Oh

Ellen Oh is the president and founder of We Need Diverse Books and the award-winning author of the middle grade novels Dragon Egg Princess, The Spirit Hunters and its sequel, Island of the Monsters, as well as the YA fantasy trilogy The Prophecy Series: Prophecy, Warrior, and King.  She is the editor of WNDB’s middle grade anthology Flying Lessons and Other Stories, and the YA anthology A Thousand Beginnings and Endings. Ellen is a former adjunct college instructor and lawyer with an insatiable curiosity for ancient Asian history. She also loves martial arts films, K-pop, K-dramas, and cooking shows, and she is a rabid fan of The Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra series. About Laura Ruby

A two-time National Book Award Finalist, Laura Ruby writes fiction for adults, teens and children. She is the author of the Printz Medal Winning novel Bone Gap, as well as Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All. Other works include the Edgar®-nominated children’s mystery Lily’s Ghosts, the ALA Quick Pick for teens Good Girls (2006), a collection of interconnected short stories about blended families for adults, I’m not Julia Roberts (2007), and the York trilogy. She is on the faculty of Hamline University’s Masters in Writing for Children Program. She makes her home in the Chicago area.

About Anne Ursu

Anne Ursu is the author of several books for young readers and is the 2013 recipient of the McKnight Fellowship in Children’s Literature. Her book The Real Boy was an Indie Next pick and on the 2013 longlist for the National Book Award. Anne is also the author of the three books that comprise The Cronus Chronicles: The Shadow Thieves, The Siren Song, and The Immortal Fire. Anne teaches at Hamline University's MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults, and lives in Minneapolis with her son and three cats.
