For Kalb, a journalist and media observer for more than six decades, when Trump called the press an “enemy of the American people,” alarm bells went off. This wasn’t just more fulmination—Trump’s words echoed those of Stalin, Hitler, and Mao, all of whom derided their critics, including the media, as being “enemies of the people.” As with these dictators, Kalb believes that Trump’s goal is to delegitimize the work of journalists in order to sow confusion about what’s true and who can be trusted.
