Loved the movie? Then you'll probably enjoy these six titles, each of which has something in common with the cult classic.
Whether you’ve seen it three dozen times or (gasp) just once, chances are you liked “The Princess Bride.” Or at least got a kick out of the brilliant Mandy Patinkin’s character: “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” (We decline to consider cases where you’ve either not seen the movie or did not like it.)
Here are a few books that might strike that same delicious, witty, romantic chord for you:
- The Princess Bride by William Goldman. No Cary Elwes, but otherwise, this book bears something of a resemblance to the movie.
- The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. Like The Princess Bride, this novel of a fantastical quest of concealed identity was made into a moving, if at times cheesy, movie.
- Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott. This adventure may not have quite the wit of our exemplar, but it has all the romance.
- The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell. Jaw-dropping evil, the strength of true love, and a few doses of cunning and poison put this excellent novel on the list.
- Candide by Voltaire. Pirates? Check. Intrepid adventurers? Check. Love and revenge? Check and check. Plus a wee bit of philosophy thrown in on the side.
- Stardust by Neil Gaiman. A young boy in a magical land pursues his one true love in this charming story featuring adventure, humor, and even poison.
