Details "How Not to Get Rich: The Financial Misadventures of Mark Twain" Mark Twain coined the term “Gilded Age,” and like many of that era, he was swept up in the zeal to make a fortune. As Crawford recounts in this lively financial biography of one of the country’s great humorists, Twain did not have the knack for making money, though he never stopped trying. His poor business sense led him into schemes ranging from silver-mining to marketing coca leaves to promoting inventions such as board games and a Kaolotype engraving process. While some projects, like his publishing firm, at least began successfully, bad luck, bad timing, or dishonest partners sank the ventures. Crawford, a critic, essayist, and author of Twilight at Monticello and Unwise Passions, combines humor and history for this engaging look at a little-known side of an American icon.
