A grassroots organization brings its message to Frederick.
Maybe you read the recent VIDA Count (or columnist Alice Stephens’ take on it). Maybe you follow literary issues in the paper or online. Or maybe you’ve just noticed how lily-white most “recommended books” lists tend to be. Whatever the reason, you know there’s a serious diversity deficit in the stories we’re reading — and the ones we’re sharing with our kids.
And that’s where We Need Diverse Books comes in. A nonprofit focused on addressing — and remedying — the lack of diversity in children’s literature, WNDB is spreading its message around the country.
This week, it brings that message to Frederick.
On Friday, May 1st, children’s authors Lamar Giles, Meg Medina, Ellen Oh, Caroline Richmond, and Robin Talley will take part in a diversity-focused panel discussion moderated by Shari Ostrow-Scher, a former educator and founder of Children of Incarcerated Parents Partnership and Children of Promise, Children of Hope. Book sales and signings will follow.
This free event, presented in partnership with Frederick Reads, will be held at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center at 40 S. Carroll Street in downtown Frederick, MD. Registration is requested. Call 301-695-2500 or email [email protected] to register.
