Congratulations to novelists Jesmyn Ward and Viet Thanh Nguyen, who were just named 2017 MacArthur Fellows! The so-called “genius grant” gives the writers $625,000 each to do with as they please, no strings attached.

 

 

We hope it frees them up to write more works of transformative fiction, such as Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing (which we reviewed here) and Nguyen’s The Sympathizer (which we praised here).
