Vick Mickunas interviews Melissa Fay Greene about her memoir No Biking in the House Without a Helmet (Sarah Crichton/FSG Books)

Melissa Fay Greene had no plans to write a memoir. Greene has written about serious matters in her previous books, Praying for Sheetrock, The Temple Bombing, and Last Man Out. While Greene was conducting research for There Is No Me Without You, her book about the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa, she became aware of all the children in Ethiopia who are now orphans.

Greene and her husband decided to adopt. The couple had already raised a family of their own when they made the decision to welcome more children into their family. No Biking in the House Without a Helmet is a humorous and heartfelt memoir about Greene’s family and their adoption odyssey.

This interview originally aired on WYSO Public Radio in Yellow Springs, Ohio. (www.wyso.org)
