Vick Mickunas interviews Chang-rae Lee about his novel The Surrendered (Riverhead Books). This story unfolds with the expansiveness of fine cinematography as Lee takes his readers on a journey through time. We visit Manchuria in the 1930′s, Korea in the 1950′s, and modern day Italy and New Jersey.

The fates of the three main characters are intertwined by love and tragedy as they proceed inexorably along their haunted pilgrimages through life. In this interview Lee talks about the writing process and what led him to become a writer. Lee teaches creative writing at Princeton University.

This interview originally aired on WYSO Public Radio in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
