Meet Jessica Shattuck

  • April 6, 2017

The author of The Women in the Castle comes to DC on Sat., Apr. 8th, at 3:30PM.

Meet Jessica Shattuck

Shattuck’s third novel takes us inside Germany before, during, and after the Third Reich. Drawing on her own grandparents’ experience, Shattuck, author of The Hazards of Good Breeding and Perfect Life, follows the families of Resistance fighters as they live through and then are haunted by events of World War II. While the men in Shattuck’s story are the martyrs—losing their lives in a conspiracy to assassinate Hitler in July 1944 — the heroes are the wives they leave behind. The narrative focuses on Marianne, who fulfills her promise to her husband by sheltering the widows and children of his fellow conspirators. As the years pass, the women lose touch, but then a reunion forces them at last to face the truth of their wartime legacy.

This event is free to attend with no reservation required. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis.
