Imbolo Mbue in Conversation with Aisha Saaka

Mbue’s eloquent debut novel, Behold the Dreamers, takes the timeless story of immigrants coming to the U.S. in search of a better life and plants it in a particularly difficult historical moment. The 2008 economic crisis was a hard time for the American Dream, and when Jende and Neni Jonga arrive in New York from Cameroon late in 2007, they initially feel fortunate to find work with the family of a Wall Street executive. But their employer works for Lehman Brothers, and the Jongas learn hard truths about the socio-economic realities of their new country. Mbue, herself a native of Limbe, Cameroon, now living in New York, draws on her dual heritage to vividly depict a singular cultural crossroads.

Imbolo will be in conversation with Aisha Saaka, Vice President of the Young African Professionals (YAP) Network. YAP is a network of more than 10,000 young African professionals in the D.C. Metro area, which provides a forum for professionals interested in Africa to engage with contemporary leaders in business, technology, philanthropy and social entrepreneurship; to network and discover opportunities among Africans; support Arts and culture from the African Diaspora; and promote entrepreneurial activities among our members.
