Big new titles perfect for the littles.

Children’s Book Roundup: October 2021

October’s shorter days and longer nights mean extra reading time before bed! Here are three terrific new titles to explore with your budding bookworm, whether he’s obsessed with all things Halloween and monstrous or just feels like getting lost in a charmingly hypnotic yarn.

Red by Laura Vaccaro Seeger (Neal Porter Books). “dark red…light red…lost red…bright red.” Lush crimson drenches this beautifully illustrated, poignant tale of a young fox who gets lost and must navigate the treacherous — and mostly manmade — hurdles between him and home. Don’t let its deceptively simple language fool you. This poetic story packs an outsized punch.

Halloween Is Coming! by Cal Everett (author) and Lenny Wen (illustrator) (Sourcebooks Jabberwocky). “Marching in the school parade/in frightening costumes that we've made; Look around, the signs are clear/Halloween is getting near!” Join in the fun as the whole neighborhood preps for the spookiest, silliest, most candy-filled day of the entire year!

My First Pop-Up Mythological Monsters by Owen Davey (Candlewick Studio). Dracula and Frankenstein get all the press these days, but they’re nothing compared to the mythical beasts of yore. From Greece’s Medusa and Minotaur to Japan’s Shachihoko and the Philippines’ Sarimanok, creatures ancient and awesome leap off each page of this colorful and informative but not-too-scary volume.
